Description

This Polish Herring in Oil (Śledzie w Oleju) recipe is a classic must try! Salty, tangy herring marinated with onions and spices in oil. A traditional Polish appetizer that’s perfect for holidays or any special occasion!

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 6 salted herring fillets
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup (240ml) vegetable oil
  • 2 tbsp vinegar (apple cider or white wine)
  • 2-3 bay leaves
  • 5-6 allspice berries
  • 10 black peppercorns

Instructions

  1. Soak the Herring: Rinse herring fillets and soak in water or milk for 2-3 hours. Pat dry and cut into pieces.
  2. Prepare the Marinade: Slice onions and mix oil, vinegar, bay leaves, allspice, and peppercorns in a bowl.
  3. Assemble: Layer herring and onions in a jar, pouring marinade over each layer. Seal tightly.
  4. Marinate: Refrigerate for at least 24 hours before serving.

Notes

For a zesty twist, add lemon slices or fresh dill to the marinade.

Make sure to change the soaking water or milk to reduce saltiness effectively.
