Description
A classic thumbprint cookies recipe featuring buttery cookies filled with sweet jam, inspired by traditional Polish ciasteczka z marmoladą.
Ingredients
Units Scale
- 1 cup (226 g) unsalted butter, softened
- 1/2 cup (100 g) granulated sugar
- 1 large egg yolk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 cups (250 g) all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup (160 g) jam or fruit preserves
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
- Cream the butter and sugar in a mixing bowl until the mixture becomes light, soft, and fluffy. This step helps create a tender cookie texture.
- Add the egg yolk and vanilla extract and mix well until smooth and fully combined.
- Gradually add the flour to the mixture. Stir gently until a soft dough forms. Avoid overmixing to keep the cookies soft.
- Chill the dough in the refrigerator for 20–30 minutes. This helps prevent the cookies from spreading during baking.
- Roll the dough into small balls, about 1 inch in size, using your hands to make them smooth.
- Place the dough balls on the baking sheet, leaving space between each one.
- Make a small indentation in the center of each ball using your thumb or the back of a spoon. Press gently to avoid cracks.
- Fill each indentation with jam or fruit preserves. Use a small amount so it stays in place while baking.
- Bake the cookies for 12–15 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden and the centers are set.
- Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before moving them.
- Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before serving or storing.
Notes
- Use thick jam to avoid spreading
- Chill dough for best shape
- Do not overbake for softer cookies
